Choose coir in bulk

Copertiz supplies coir raw materials in bulk, in various fractions and compositions. Each fraction has unique physical and chemical properties that determine its application in substrate production. Depending on your needs, Copertiz will pair you with the right type of coir material.

Unwashed, washed and buffered coir

Unwashed coir often comes from young, unaged coir husk. The biological micro-activity in the husk is still present and the natural salts are retained in high concentrations because the husk was not washed out by natural precipitation or an artificial rinsing process.

Washed coir: Abundant rinsing with (rain) water removes salts from the material. This process provides a more stable chemical composition and makes this coir raw material more suitable for a wider range of applications.

Buffered coir undergoes an additional process in which sodium and potassium ions are replaced by calcium ions. This treatment is mainly done at our production site in Bree and results in a coco peat that can be used immediately for sensitive crops.

1. Coco peat (or coir pith)

Coco peat is the fine, spongy residue produced after separating fibres from coir husk. It resembles peat in structure.

  • (very) fine-grained structure
  • Good water/air balance in the growing medium
2. Coir chips

Coir chips are produced by cutting the coir husk into block-shaped fractions of variable size.

  • Good water/air balance in the growing medium.
  • As raw material or decorative element
3. Crushed coir

Crushed coir is a ground form of coir husk with a mixture of coarse and fine fractions, depending on the crushing process used.

  • Rough, crumbly structure
  • Good balance between water retention and drainage
  • Flexible use of material
